Letter of Solicitation for Psa Emergeing Curators Project 2019
The Emerging Curators Project, hosted by the Power Station of Art, was first launched in 2014, and has so far helped more than 20 young Chinese curators realize 14 exhibitions. Their practices at the power-plant-converted art space have not only expanded our curatorial horizons, but also allowed more young Chinese artists and their talents to be accessed and appreciated by both the audience and the international art community.
Upon the Project’s 6th anniversary, the jury is hereby announcing a series of major updates and adjustments to its solicitation requirements and evaluation approach, in hopes of improving the quality level of those eventually realized exhibitions. The 6th edition of the Emerging Curators Project will provide support to two curatorial teams in realizing their concepts within PSA’s exhibitional space, and compared with past editions, this year’s Project will give particular emphasis to:
1. Exclusivity and necessity of curatorial proposals:
We welcome you to spend more time thinking about the exclusivity of your proposals, rather than their completeness from the technical perspective. You will also need to verify the necessity of your proposals in artistic expression. Of course, we welcome you to seek possibilities beyond what a standardized curatorial proposalhas to be.
2. Practical experiences and materials accumulated in realizing past exhibitions:
We will take into consideration how you engage and develop curatorial proposals, as well as how your upcoming exhibition will create meaning for your past exhibitions. If you have zero experience in exhibition realization, we still hope you can provide relevant experiences and materials relevant to the field.
3. Curators’ reading and writing proficiencies:
We encourage critical thinking and clear written expressions that work best with curatorial experiences, as we believe they represent one of the fundamental qualities that talented curators should command. That’s why we also include critical thinking and written expression among this year’s key selective criteria.
The above mentioned adjustments will mark the start of the Emerging Curators Project’s long-term self-renewal – on this long journey of fostering next-generation curatorial talents, we will continue to self-reflect and build a sold dialogues platform between young audience, artists and curators.
Support Awards for Winning Proposals:
1. An “Emerging Curators Project Special Fund” of up to RMB 300,000 (tax included) for each elected individual/team to execute their exhibitions;
2. Full sponsorship for overseas research opportunities to destinations like France or Switzerland for each wining curator;
3. Opportunities to take their realized exhibitions onto overseas tours;
4. Opportunities of in-depth exchange and learning with jury members.
In addition to her role as the Director of Power Station of Art, Gong Yan is also a curator active in China’s contemporary art scene.
A critic and curator of contemporary art, Fei Dawei now serves as the Rotating President of PSA’s 2nd Academic Committee.
As an artist, Wang’s art concepts and expressions have always been regarded as “unorthodox” within the contemporary art context. As a member of the New Measurement Group (1988-1995), Wang has taken part in historic exhibitions including the Stars Group Exhibition (1979), China/Avant-Garde Exhibition (1989), Emergency Exit (Feichangkou) (1991), and China Pioneering Art Exhibition (1992).
Homi Bhabha is the Anne F.Rothenberg Professor of English and American Literature and Language, as well as the Director of the Mahindra Humanities Center at Harvard University. He is a leading cultural and literary theorist who explores post-colonial theory, cultural change and power, cosmopolitanism, human rights, and other topics.
Chris Dercon now works as the President of RMN. He is an art historian, documentary filmmaker and cultural producer. He was the director of Tate Modern in London,the artistic director of the Volksubühne Berlin.
Donna De Salvo is an international curator. She joined the Whitney Museum of Art in 2004 and was appointed the first curator of the museum in 2006. In 2015, she became the Deputy Director for International Initiatives at the Whitney Museum of Art.
Ding Yi, a renowned artist, is a member of the Experimental Art Committee of China Artists Association as well as a council member of Shanghai Artists Association.
Feng Yuan is a Professor at Sun Yat-Sen University, and a member of its Academic Committee of Humanities and Social Sciences. Currently, he is engaged in visual culture studies, cultural criticism, research on architecture and design, as well as the practice of landscape and public art design, and of contemporary art and curation.
Gao Shiming is a curator and critic based in Hangzhou, China. He is currently Vice President, professor and Ph.D. tutor at China Academy of Art (CAA), as well as Director of its Centre for Chinese Visual Studies.
Hou Hanru, based in Rome, Paris and San Francisco, is a prolific writer and curator. He is currently the Artistic Director of MAXXI (National Museum for 21st Century Arts), Rome.
Mark Wigley is a Professor of Architecture and Dean Emeritus of Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation. He is a historian and theorist who explores the intersection of architecture, art, philosophy, culture, and technology.
1. Preliminary Evaluation:
In strict accordance with solicitation requirements, PSA’s Emerging Curators Project team will screen and present all valid proposals;
2. Secondary Evaluation:
Based on results of the preliminary evaluation, the jury president will nominate five candidate proposals for final evaluation;
3. Final Evaluation:
With face-to-face interviews, the jury, with all members present, will vote to decide the two
1. All applicants shall be born not earlier than January 1st, 1979, including both Chinese nationals as well as overseas Chinese.
2. All submitted proposals shall be confined to the contemporary art category only, although there are no limits on sub-category, genre and form.
3. All submitted proposals shall be of single-person curation or multi-person curation (No more than two curators per team)
*Curators shall not contribute to their proposals in the capacity of artist.
Materials to be Submitted
1. Curatorial proposal, which shall include statement of curatorial concepts (no more than 600 words), exhibition structure, artists’ list and biography, exhibit pictures and introductions (no more than 200 Chinese characters per piece), exhibition designs, and budget details (including exhibit production, installation/uninstallation, transportation, insurance, travel and accommodation costs, etc.).
2. All exhibition designs shall tailor to the spaces appointed by PSA, and applicants shallchoose from either of two exhibition spaces within Hall 7 on PSA’s 5th floor.
3. Previous exhibition curatorial experiences: all applicants shall provide a statement about his/her curatorial experiences, including proposal texts, pictures and introductions, and site photos – we prefer materials as detailed as possible.
4. Exhibition commentary: all applicantsshall provide at least one exhibition review, unrestricted in length and illustrated with pictures. The reviewed exhibitions don’t have to be those contributed to by applicantsthemselves.
5. Résumé, ID (scanned copies of ID card or passport), and contact information:
The abovementioned materialsshall be submitted in both Chinese and English.
There shall be no restrictions on the forms of proposal presentation, like PDF or PPT only, as we welcome proposals of richness and diversity.
For co-curated proposals, applicants shall submit materials for at least one co-curator for item 3 and 4.
Applicants shall also submit a tailored pubic education plans for their curatorial proposals.

Notes for Applicants
1. Applicants shall carefully read solicitation rules in the announcement, before they submit required materials accordingly. Submissions that fail stipulated standards or requirements shall be eliminated at the preliminary evaluation.
2. Allocation, utilization and production supplier designation that relate to the project grant shall be checked and approved by the PSA team, with all execution details and procedures to follow China’s relevant regulations. And all expenses beyond the budget shall be shouldered by applicants themselves.
3. The PSA team will help nominated curators refine their curatorial plans, so that they meet the fire safety codes of China’s public art museums.
4. All participating projects shall fulfill a two-to-three-month exhibition duration in terms of technical safety and maintenance.
5. Emergency withdrawal rules: in order to guarantee the quality of eventual exhibitions, PSA has the right to withdraw the candidate’s eligibility in the following situations: lack of practical execution capabilities, lack of responsibility for the curatorial work, failing to follow managerial regulations of the museum, or failing to execute the work before the appointed deadline.
By relevant laws and regulations in China, all applicants who voluntarily submit their curatorial plans to PSA are considered by the organizing committee to accept that the attribution of submitted projects’ copyrights have been irrevocably claimed as follows:
(i) Statement of Originality
The participating projects shall be the appliants’ original work without infringement of any other’s copyrights, trademark rights and other intellectual property rights; the projects shall have never been commercially exploited in any forms. Otherwise, the organizing committee shall invalidate the projects’ qualifications to be included, selected and awarded, and reserve the rights to pursue further legal actions.
(ii) Attribution of Participating Projects’ Intellectual Property Rights
Attribution of all submitted plans’ rights belongs to the applicant. PSA, however, owns the rights over display, promotion and other activities regarding all the awarded and selected projects.
PSA’s official website (www.powerstationofart.com) and its official Wechat account “yancong psa” are the only appointed portals for the project’s information release.
(iii) All participating plans shall respect China’s national conditions and shall not violate current laws and regulations.
*PSA reserves all final rights of interpretation for the abovementioned event.
